I bought The Nosy Neighbor at a used book sale. The synopsis was interesting and thought it would be a good read when I was in the mood for a suspenseful romance.
Out of curiosity, I went on Amazon.com to check out the readers’ ratings. I was shocked to see that they were low. However, some readers liked it, so I forged ahead to read The Nosy Neighbor.
The heroine, Lucy Baker, just finished defending a child molester and murderer. After a not guilty verdict, Lucy decides to quit practicing law. Lucy took her guilty conscience and he r dog, Sadie, to Edison, New Jersey and bought a house in the suburbs.
Lucy planned to work for an elderly woman a few hours a week until she decided what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. She is engaged to Jonathan St. Clair, a passionate and charming man who keeps his business life close to the chest. The FBI flings Jonathan’s door to business wide open for Lucy to see. In the middle of her personal crises, Lucy meets her neighbor, Wylie Wilson and his dog Coop.
The story is shaping up nicely until Lucy falls, bumps her head on the road, and her foot touches a live electrical wire. A day or two later, Lucy can read people’s thoughts from time to time.
This turn throws a monkey wrench into the entire plot. Going in, readers do not expect eeriness like this. I believe that is what ruined the book for Amazon readers. Heck it messed it up for me, too.
It’s a shame because Fern Michaels writing style is superb. She keeps the plot moving by not boring the reader with too much descriptive details. Fern Michaels proved that she is an excellent writer with books, like Pretty Woman and Texas Fury, but the mind reading plot turn messed The Nosy Neighbor up for everybody.
